My name is Jörg Hauser, we are here in beautiful Augsburg.
We are sitting here in Mullu's, a snowboard shop.
You will find us here in the middle of the town between the town hall and cathedral.
At the start the first question was of course what we should call the shop?
We sat down with a lot of friends and thought about it.
It should have something to do with snowboarding, sport and clothing.
We came up with various options, like "Shape".
Like the shape of a board or how a person is dressed.
And it all didn't ring true for us.
Then someone came up with the idea of "Mullu's"
because it has been my nickname for about 10 years.
And we all thought that it was actually the perfect name for the shop.
So Mullu's has now existed for three years.
And the important process was to make people aware of the company -
to continuously do advertising
so that everyone knows that we are here.
I discovered the IKEA STOLMEN system with a salesperson.
He set up a few pieces in our showroom.
I could really imagine how they would look in my shop.
I went to IKEA and then saw immediately that
this is the system that we really need.
It was reasonably priced and very easy to assemble.
And that was very important for us because we have seasonal items,
so we need a system that is very variable and can be modified quickly.
And so it became clear very quickly that IKEA was the right one for us.
The next problem was where to put our snowboards.
Of course there are systems from the manufacturers.
But we didn't have a lot of space and then
on a trip to IKEA I walked past the wardrobes
and saw these trouser holders
and thought that could be perfect for holding snowboards.
We shortened them and then just covered them in foam -
to protect the boards. STOLMEN has the massive advantage
of being very variable. So it's simple when the season changes -
summer to winter - our stock varies too.
The conversion is just very, very quick.
When you get longer clothes in the summer we have to lift the rails.
You just need two Allen keys, take the screw out
push it all up then tighten it again and you are done!
Of course it all means work. Just like anything in business.
I can recommend it to anyone who is going self-employed.
It is a lot of work and you have to accept a certain amount of risk.
But you have to stay tough and keep on going.
That goes for anyone who wants to achieve something: stick with it.
And it will turn into something! Who knows what will happen in 4-5 years-
maybe we could add another branch or two.
IKEA BUSINESS
Jorge Hause is passionate about snowboarding. Coming from retail, he was able to turn his love of the sport into a successful store packed with boards, clothes and equipment. Mullu’s might be small, but its laid-back creative atmosphere makes up for it many times over.
